On the road to safety
In recent years, automotive manufacturers have focused on making their vehicles safer to drive and more resistant to break-in and theft. What's more, buying a vehicle with this equipment may qualify you for lower insurance premiums. Safety features can help you before, during and after the unexpected occurs.
Without question, the safety belt (standard on all new vehicles) still provides the most effective crash protection but here are few others for consideration:
- Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)) - ABS helps you maintain steering control during hard-braking situations.
- Traction Control - The all-speed, full-function traction control system controls engine, transmission and brake functions, enhancing traction while accelerating on slippery surfaces.
- All-Wheel Drive (AWD) - When the drive system senses that traction has deteriorated, it automatically adjusts torque distribution to each of the four wheels to make the most of the available grip and help keep you moving.
- Stability Control - Electronic Stability Control Systems, such as StabiliTrak®, apply brake pressure at the appropriate wheel or wheels to address the causes of understeer or oversteer. It responds quickly when a lateral skid is detected, helping you maintain control and remain headed in your intended direction.
- Air Bags - Air bags have saved literally thousands of lives. The latest models have been designed to operate with less force than in the past, maximizing protection while minimizing the chance of inadvertent injury.
- OnStar® - If your air bags deploy, OnStar-equipped vehicles send a signal to an OnStar Advisor, who contacts you to see if you need help. You can also press the OnStar emergency button anytime you need help.
While safety often takes second place to more glamorous factors up for consideration such as style and performance, looking into a vehicle's safety rating prior to short listing it is a good start.
